Ballon d’Or 2024: Vinicius Jr Leads the Race, but City’s Rodri Could Spring a Surprise
Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. may be the hot favorite to lift this year’s Ballon d’Or, but a surprise contender from Manchester City is gaining serious momentum. According to a poll by MEN Sport, City’s midfield maestro Rodri could pull off a stunning upset at tonight’s prestigious ceremony.
Vinicius Jr. has had a phenomenal season, instrumental in Real Madrid’s league and European triumphs, capped by a goal in the Champions League final victory over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley. Yet, Rodri, fresh off an extraordinary season with City, is receiving strong backing. The Spaniard played a pivotal role in City’s historic Treble and helped Guardiola’s side capture a fourth consecutive Premier League title. Rodri also boasted an impressive 74-game unbeaten streak with City, only interrupted in the FA Cup final.
According to the poll, 28% of fans believe Rodri deserves the Ballon d’Or, especially with his international credentials. Rodri was a vital part of Spain’s Euro 2024-winning squad, featuring in every match except one. This added international success gives him an edge over Vinicius Jr., who hasn’t clinched a comparable title with Brazil this season.
Meanwhile, Erling Haaland, another Manchester City star, hasn’t garnered as much support in the Ballon d’Or race despite an impressive 27-goal Premier League season and a second consecutive Golden Boot. Only 7% of respondents backed the Norwegian striker, suggesting his achievements may not be enough to sway the Ballon d’Or voters.
The Ballon d’Or ceremony, set for Monday night in Paris, marks a new era for the award as UEFA joins France Football magazine in organizing the event. France Football continues to oversee the voting process, with journalists from the top 100 FIFA-ranked countries selecting the winner. The Ballon d’Or criteria were also revamped in 2022 to focus on achievements within the European season, not the calendar year.
This year’s award is guaranteed to go to a first-time winner, with no previous honorees among the 32 nominees. In a significant shift, it’s also the first time in 21 years that neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo have been nominated.
