Man City Unfazed by United’s Pursuit of Sporting’s Rising Star Ruben Amorim
In an unexpected twist, Manchester City appears unconcerned by their cross-town rivals’ latest efforts to bring in Sporting Lisbon’s head coach, Ruben Amorim. Despite Amorim’s growing reputation, reports suggest City doesn’t see the 39-year-old as a prime candidate to succeed Pep Guardiola if the managerial position opens up.
According to ESPN’s Rob Dawson, City insiders feel Amorim doesn’t quite align with their tactical DNA. Though Amorim has garnered widespread praise for his work at Sporting, Dawson’s post on X indicates that City views him as an unlikely fit, even with rumors swirling about a shake-up in their management structure. Hugo Viana is set to step in as director of football next season, replacing Txiki Begiristain, which could open doors for new ideas and personalities at the Etihad. Yet, Amorim doesn’t appear to be part of that blueprint.
Manchester United, however, seems more than willing to take the plunge. After parting ways with Erik ten Hag, United fans are abuzz at the possibility of Amorim stepping in—a fresh face they hope could breathe life into a season that’s already seen them languish at 14th in the league.
Would Amorim Suit City’s Style?
While Amorim’s tactical acumen has won him admirers across Europe, he might not have been City’s go-to choice anyway. As Guardiola’s time at City winds down, the club faces the daunting task of finding someone who can maintain the high standards he’s established. The Spanish tactician’s legacy as possibly “the greatest manager of all time” means that any successor will face tremendous pressure to deliver.
Still, Amorim’s style could bring something new and dynamic to the Etihad, even if it doesn’t fully align with the Guardiola playbook. But for now, it seems the Red Devils have a clearer path to securing the young coach’s services.
A New Era at United?
As Dawson notes, United’s interest in Amorim suggests they’re looking to make a long-term investment in one of Europe’s brightest coaching talents. While Amorim’s tactical approach may differ from City’s ideal, it clearly hasn’t deterred United, who are banking on him to help reverse their misfortunes and potentially guide them back to the upper echelons of English football. With the team floundering early on, fans are hopeful this could be the start of a much-needed revival at Old Trafford.
