Man City Star Rodri Linked with Real Madrid Move Despite Ballon d’Or Drama
Manchester City’s star midfielder Rodri has been connected with a potential transfer to Real Madrid, even after controversy at the Ballon d’Or ceremony. Despite winning the Ballon d’Or for his stellar form at City, Rodri remains open about his future, saying he’ll honor his contract with City until 2027 but isn’t ruling out a move to other clubs, including Real Madrid.
The Spanish giants have been clear about their interest, with “RODRI 2025” making headlines on Spanish newspapers earlier this year. However, Madrid notably boycotted the Ballon d’Or ceremony upon learning that Rodri would win over Vinicius Jr.
Adding complexity to the situation, Rodri originally joined City from Real’s rival, Atletico Madrid, in 2019, which could create complications if he were to consider a move to the Bernabeu.
For now, Rodri remains committed to Manchester City. He told COPE, “I don’t know. Renewal with City is not my priority right now. I want to recover, and we’ll see… Sincerely, I like to live in the present. I still have a contract with my club, I’m very happy there, and since I arrived in England, it felt like my home.”
However, he left the door open, saying, “Closing or opening any door [on La Liga] doesn’t make sense. I feel really passionate while watching the Spanish league, but the English one is special too. If anything were to force me to move, I’d have to think long and hard because I’m really comfortable there.”
Guardiola’s Future to Impact Rodri’s Decision
Rodri also mentioned that Pep Guardiola’s future at City could influence his own career choices. “There will be a before and after when Pep leaves City,” Rodri explained. “When I signed, I was told that he would leave the following year… and we are still like that five years later. He is very ambitious, and we will see. When he’s gone, things will change, but Manchester City is still Manchester City.”
Rodri’s loyalty to City is strong, yet his words suggest that his future may one day lead him back to La Liga, especially if Guardiola’s departure prompts a shift within the club.
