Manchester City defender Rúben Dias recently made headlines with his comments suggesting that Hugo Viana would join Manchester City as the new director of football in February, earlier than previously announced. However, sources in Portugal are setting the record straight.
According to O Jogo, “nothing has changed” regarding Viana’s timeline. The publication insists that Viana will stay with Sporting Club de Portugal until the end of the season, as originally stated when his move was first announced.
Viana has been selected by City to succeed Txiki Begiristain, who is stepping down at season’s end, but any suggestion of an early move is now being corrected. Contrary to Dias’s statement, Viana will not relocate to England in February; instead, he will fulfill his commitments in Portugal until summer.
O Jogo suggests that Dias may have been either misinformed or misspoke regarding the timeline, confirming that Viana’s original plan to remain at Sporting until season’s end still stands.
