Pep Guardiola to Sign New Manchester City Contract Amid Speculation Over Future
Pep Guardiola is reportedly set to end speculation about his future, with news emerging that the Manchester City boss is close to signing a new contract. Reports indicate the deal includes a one-year extension, with an option for an additional year, but notably does not include a relegation release clause.
Recent weeks have seen growing uncertainty over Guardiola’s future, especially after it was revealed he was approached by the FA regarding the England managerial role. While Guardiola has remained tight-lipped, he recently suggested a decision on his future was imminent.
As first reported by The Guardian, Guardiola’s new contract will keep him tied to The Etihad regardless of the outcome of the independent commission investigating the club over 115 alleged financial breaches. Potential penalties for the charges include relegation from the Premier League, but the absence of a break clause reflects the club’s confidence in their defense.
Guardiola’s Stance on City’s Legal Troubles
Guardiola has previously expressed loyalty to the club, stating he’d be more inclined to stay even if Manchester City faced severe penalties. In his words:
“You are questioning like we have been punished. In the moment, we are innocent until guilt is proved. I know the people want it. I know, I feel it. I will wait. Wait and see it and after the sentence has been done, we will come here and explain it.”
When asked specifically if he’d remain should the club face relegation, Guardiola doubled down:
“Absolutely, I will not consider my future depending on being here [Premier League] or being in League One. Absolutely. There is more chance to stay if we are in League One than if we were in the Champions League.”
A Boost for Manchester City
This contract extension represents a significant win for Manchester City, who currently trail Liverpool by four points in the Premier League title race. Guardiola’s commitment signals his readiness to continue his remarkable tenure, adding stability amid the ongoing legal uncertainty surrounding the club.
