Guardiola Backs Haaland Amid City’s Form Struggles: “He’s Not the Problem”
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has faced criticism during the team’s recent poor run of form, but Pep Guardiola has been quick to defend his star forward, redirecting the focus to other challenges within the squad.
Haaland’s Recent Performance
Haaland began the season in blistering form with 10 goals in his first five Premier League matches but has since netted just two in the next eight. Critics have questioned his form and even took issue with his demeanor, such as laughing during City’s recent loss to Liverpool. However, the majority of the criticism seems to stem from a misunderstanding of Guardiola’s tactical approach or Haaland’s role within the team.
This isn’t the first time Haaland has faced doubts. Despite City winning the historic Treble last season, analysts like Jamie Carragher once questioned whether Haaland was suited to Guardiola’s system. Similarly, Roy Keane previously compared aspects of Haaland’s build-up play to that of a League Two player. Yet, the Norwegian has consistently silenced his doubters by delivering goals in crucial moments.
Guardiola’s Defiant Defense
At a recent press conference, Guardiola addressed several criticisms head-on, dismissing rumors of a rift between himself and Kevin De Bruyne, who remains sidelined with injury. He then emphasized that City’s issues extend beyond Haaland.
Guardiola remarked:
“I’m desperate for five goals and assists from [Phil] Foden after last season. Five for Kevin [De Bruyne], goals and assists from Jeremy [Doku], goals and assists from Jack [Grealish], from Savinho or [Ilkay] Gundo[gan].”
The manager highlighted that injuries and unavailability of key players have been the primary challenge:
“Why hasn’t it happened? They were not here. They were injured. They weren’t ready. This is the bigger problem I have.”
Confidence in Haaland
Guardiola’s comments make it clear that Haaland is not the focal point of City’s issues. Instead, the coach trusts the Norwegian to spearhead City’s resurgence, noting his history of performing in critical games. Haaland’s four goals in two home games against Nottingham Forest exemplify his ability to deliver under pressure.
As City aims to end their winless streak, all eyes will be on their star striker to lead the charge back to winning ways.
