The Detroit Lions are reeling from a heart-wrenching 48-42 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 15, which saw them lose two key defensive players to season-ending injuries. Defensive lineman Alim McNeill and cornerback Carlton Davis III are both out for the year, adding to an already lengthy list of injuries on the defensive side of the ball. This has placed the Lions in a difficult position as they prepare for the remainder of the season.
However, there is a potential solution still available: former All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard, who remains a free agent. While there is limited time to integrate him into the defense, his addition could provide a significant boost as the Lions push toward the playoffs.
Howard, who hasn’t played this season, was effective for the Miami Dolphins in 2023. He deflected 12 passes and allowed a mere 81.3 passer rating when targeted. Though he may not be the same player he once was, the Lions can’t afford to be picky given their current situation. They desperately need help in the secondary, especially after being exposed by Buffalo’s high-powered offense.
With McNeill‘s torn ACL and Davis‘s fractured jaw, the Lions’ defense is now missing several key players, including defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, linebacker Derrick Barnes, and cornerback Ennis Rakestraw, to name a few. Detroit’s defense has already been underperforming this season, and without these additional injuries, their hopes of contending for a Super Bowl will be in jeopardy.
The Lions’ offense has been solid, but with teams like the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers possessing top-tier offenses, the defense must step up. Adding a player like Howard would provide depth and experience, potentially stabilizing a secondary in shambles. Even if the signing doesn’t work out, Detroit can cut him without significant risk, making it a low-risk, high-reward move.
The Lions are in a crucial window and have a legitimate shot at the Super Bowl this season. However, if they fall short, the lack of aggressive moves like this could lead to regrets. Signing Xavien Howard could be the final piece they need to make a serious push for their first-ever championship.
