South Carolina will officially be without these two star players in the Citrus Bowl

We’re live with breaking news out of South Carolina as they prepare for the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against No. 20 Illinois. It’s now officially confirmed that the Gamecocks will be without two of their star players.

As expected, Kyle Kennard, the star EDGE rusher, will not be playing in the Citrus Bowl. There was also uncertainty surrounding running back Raheim Sanders, who recently declared for the 2025 NFL Draft. While it was widely anticipated that Sanders would opt out, it’s now confirmed: he has played his last game for the Gamecocks.

The official confirmation came with the release of the Gamecocks’ depth chart for the Citrus Bowl. Both Kennard and Sanders are absent, confirming they will not be suiting up in Orlando. It’s standard practice for players who have declared for the NFL Draft to skip bowl games to avoid potential injuries before the NFL Combine in late February.

This is a significant blow for South Carolina. Sanders led the team in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns, while Kennard led the team in sacks and forced fumbles. They were key contributors on both sides of the ball.

Losing these two impactful players creates a significant challenge for Coach Shane Beamer. He now needs to find ways to fill these voids. However, this also presents an opportunity for other players to step up and prove themselves. While securing their 10th win of the season is a major goal, Beamer will also use this opportunity to give younger players valuable game experience and assess their potential.

Despite these opt-outs, the Gamecocks still have several players likely headed to the NFL who are choosing to play in the bowl game, including Demetrius Knight Jr. This is a positive sign for the team’s competitive spirit. South Carolina will also have key playmakers on the field, including quarterback LaNorris Sellers, EDGE rusher Dylan Stewart, and wide receiver Nyck Harbor. They will be looking to lead the Gamecocks to a bowl game victory and secure their 10th win of the season, a feat achieved only four times previously in program history.

So, while the absence of Sanders and Kennard is a setback, the Gamecocks are still determined to finish the season strong and give their younger players a chance to shine in the Citrus Bowl.
