Will Oscar Adaway Emerge as the Gamecocks’ Starting Running Back This Spring?

COLUMBIA, LIVE REPORT — The South Carolina Gamecocks have added a key piece to their backfield with the signing of running back Rahsul Faison from the transfer portal. The former Utah State standout, who racked up an impressive 1,109 rushing yards last season, has traded his winter boots for cleats as he joins the team for the spring semester.

This move comes amid a reshuffling of the Gamecocks’ running back room following the departures of Rocket Sanders and Juju McDowell. While there are existing options on the depth chart, securing a player of Faison’s caliber signals a clear intention to find an immediate-impact playmaker.

Current running back Oscar Adaway, however, isn’t handing over the RB1 title without a fight. “Glad to have you,” he said, welcoming Faison to Columbia. But when it comes to locking down the starting role for the 2025 season, Adaway made it clear: it’s a competition.

Faison’s arrival has stirred speculation that the newcomer might be the favorite. As some have suggested, “They’re not going to bring in a guy like that and not play him.” But the Gamecocks’ coaching staff isn’t ready to crown anyone just yet, with the rotation set to remain undecided until the eve of the season opener on August 31.

When asked after the Gamecocks’ tough 21-17 loss in the Citrus Bowl if he expects to be the lead back next season, Adaway offered a measured response: “That’s for God to decide.” While divine intervention might play a part, Adaway knows the rest is up to him.

Adaway showcased his grit and talent in the Citrus Bowl despite rolling his ankle during practice that week. He logged 14 carries for 69 yards, including a spectacular 36-yard touchdown run, one of USC’s two scores on the day. Adding seven receptions for 37 yards, Adaway capped his season with totals of 295 rushing yards, three touchdowns, and 15 catches for 145 yards—a solid contribution for someone who started the year third on the depth chart.

For Adaway, however, individual stats mean little without team success. After the loss, he brushed off praise for his performance, focused instead on the team’s overall outcome.

The stage is set for a heated battle in the backfield as Faison brings his dynamic skill set to the mix. But Adaway, with his resilience and proven ability to deliver in big moments, isn’t going anywhere quietly. Gamecock Nation, stay tuned—this competition is just heating up.
