The Detroit Lions’ playoff run in 2023 ended in heartbreak when they blew a 17-point lead in the NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers, falling just short of a Super Bowl appearance. This year, however, they are poised to make history, with a Divisional Round showdown against the Washington Commanders on the horizon.
Star running back Jahmyr Gibbs spoke to reporters on January 15 about the team’s growth since last season. When asked how this year’s squad compares to the 2023 team, Gibbs confidently replied (via the Lions’ team website), “We’re a better team than we were last year.”
The numbers support Gibbs’ claim. The Lions’ offense, already impressive in 2023, has taken a significant leap this season, averaging 6.1 more points per game than last year, making them the highest-scoring team in the league.
Meanwhile, the defense has also made strides. In 2023, they ranked in the bottom 10, allowing 23.2 points per game. This season, they’ve climbed to 7th in the league, surrendering just 20.1 points per game.
Much of the offensive improvement can be attributed to growth from within the roster. Jameson Williams, in his third season, surpassed 1,000 yards after two disappointing years, and Gibbs has blossomed into a star in his second season. One major addition that made a difference was the signing of Kevin Zeitler to bolster an already strong offensive line.
On the defensive side, young players have stepped up significantly. Brian Branch earned a Pro Bowl selection in his second season, while Kerby Joseph led the league in interceptions, securing a First Team All-Pro honor in his third year. The additions of Terrion Arnold and Carlton Davis at cornerback further strengthened the defense, even with the absence of their best player on that side of the ball.
As the Lions gear up for their first playoff game of the season, Gibbs and the team are optimistic that their improvements will carry them further than last year’s heartbreaking finish.
