Captain Munnerlyn Takes Helm as Head Coach at Julius Chambers High School

Former South Carolina Gamecocks standout and longtime NFL cornerback Captain Munnerlyn has been named the head football coach at Julius Chambers High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. Known for his toughness, confidence, and leadership throughout his playing days, Munnerlyn now steps into a new role—mentoring the next generation of athletes.

“This is an incredible opportunity to give back,” Munnerlyn shared. “I want to take what I’ve learned from my time on the field and help these young men develop discipline, structure, and skills that extend beyond football.”

Munnerlyn’s football journey is nothing short of remarkable. At the University of South Carolina (2006–2008), he quickly established himself as a force on the field. As a freshman in 2006, he played in 11 games, racking up two five-tackle performances. By 2007, Munnerlyn had become a dual threat, excelling as both a nickel back and return specialist, earning All-SEC honors. His standout moment came in 2008 when he returned a kickoff for 84 yards and a blocked field goal for 81 yards against Kentucky, solidifying his reputation as a playmaker.

In 2009, the Carolina Panthers selected Munnerlyn in the seventh round of the NFL Draft. Over a decade-long professional career, Munnerlyn made his mark with both the Panthers and the Minnesota Vikings, becoming a trusted leader in every locker room he joined.

Post-retirement, Munnerlyn transitioned into coaching, volunteering for two seasons at Myers Park High School in Charlotte. Now, as head coach of Chambers High, he plans to bring his NFL-level insight and work ethic to the high school gridiron.

“My goal is to inspire these young men not just to win on the field, but to succeed in life,” Munnerlyn said. “Football taught me so much, and I’m ready to pass that on.”

With his rich background and passion for player development, Munnerlyn looks poised to build a program that thrives both in competition and in shaping future leaders.
