DJ Suspended After Playing Inappropriate Song During South Carolina-LSU Game
In a stunning turn of events, the South Carolina Gamecocks have suspended their basketball arena DJ, DJ T.O., following an inappropriate song choice during their recent matchup against LSU. The incident, which has sparked outrage on social media, occurred late in the game when South Carolina seemed to be closing in on victory.
The controversy stems from the DJ’s decision to play a song by Camoflauge, the late rapper and father of LSU player Flau’Jae Johnson. Tragically, Camoflauge, whose real name was Jason Johnson, was murdered in 2003, just six months before Flau’Jae was born. The choice of music was widely condemned as insensitive and disrespectful to both Flau’Jae and the LSU program.
The University of South Carolina quickly addressed the situation, issuing a formal apology and taking immediate action.
“We are addressing Friday night’s inappropriate in-game song selection and subsequent Instagram post by the DJ who is hired to work our women’s basketball games,” the university stated. “Her actions were understandably upsetting to Flau’Jae Johnson and her family and disrespectful to the LSU program and fans. Conference rivalries and passionate fan bases should only serve to enhance sports, not be used to target individual players personally.”
The statement continued: “We regret that it came to that in our venue after a game that saw both teams capture the level of national attention that women’s basketball has earned, and we apologize to Flau’Jae, her family, and LSU.”
As part of the disciplinary action, DJ T.O. will be suspended for the Gamecocks’ next women’s basketball home game, scheduled for Sunday, February 2nd, against Auburn. The university also emphasized plans to meet with the DJ to provide further education on appropriate conduct moving forward.
The South Carolina Women’s Basketball Twitter account shared the university’s statement, underscoring their commitment to maintaining a respectful and competitive environment.
This incident, which overshadowed what was otherwise a highly anticipated matchup, serves as a reminder of the importance of sensitivity and professionalism, even in the heat of competition. Both programs have garnered national attention for their exceptional performances this season, and the focus will now turn back to the court as they move forward.
