Virginia Tech’s New Offense Adds Intrigue to South Carolina’s 2025 Season Opener
When South Carolina kicks off the 2025 season against Virginia Tech this August, the Hokies will feature a revamped offensive attack under new leadership. On Monday, Virginia Tech announced the hiring of former Tulsa head coach Phillip Montgomery as the team’s offensive coordinator—a move that will bring a fresh approach to the Hokies’ game plan.
Montgomery Brings Veteran Experience to Virginia Tech’s Offense
Montgomery arrives in Blacksburg with an impressive résumé, having previously served as the head coach at Tulsa (2015-22) and an offensive coordinator at Auburn, Baylor, and Houston. Over the years, he has played a crucial role in developing elite quarterbacks like Robert Griffin III, Bryce Petty, and Case Keenum.
Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry praised the hire, emphasizing Montgomery’s ability to develop quarterbacks and design explosive offenses.
“Philip Montgomery is one of the most respected offensive minds in college football,” Pry said. “His ability to develop quarterbacks and build explosive offenses will be instrumental in our continued growth as a program. Philip’s experience as both a head coach and a coordinator will help us maximize our talent and put our players in the best position to succeed.”
Montgomery’s Impact on Virginia Tech’s Offense
With Montgomery at the helm, returning dual-threat quarterback Kyron Drones is expected to take another step forward. Drones completed 136 of 224 passes for 1,562 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, while also showcasing his mobility with 336 rushing yards and six scores. His versatility will be key in implementing Montgomery’s high-tempo system.
Montgomery replaces Tyler Bowen, who left Virginia Tech this offseason to become the offensive line coach and run-game coordinator at Ohio State.
South Carolina’s Defense Faces a Unique Test
While Virginia Tech’s offense will be adjusting to a new scheme, South Carolina’s defense will also be undergoing a transition. Defensive coordinator Clayton White will have to replace several key defenders, including Nick Emmanwori, Kyle Kennard, Demetrius Knight Jr., Debo Williams, and T.J. Sanders. The matchup against Montgomery’s offense will be an early test for a Gamecocks unit in the midst of a rebuild.

For Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer, this game carries personal significance. Beamer not only played for Virginia Tech but also spent time as an assistant coach with the program. Having grown up around the Hokies, while his father, Hall of Fame coach Frank Beamer, led the team, this matchup will be a meaningful homecoming.
