LaNorris Sellers Shines: Wins Freshman Player of the Year at Steve Spurrier Awards
South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers continues to rack up accolades for his stellar 2024 season, adding another prestigious honor to his resume. After being named SEC Freshman of the Year, Sellers has now claimed Freshman Player of the Year at the Steve Spurrier Awards.
Despite battling an injury during the season, Sellers delivered an electrifying performance, leading South Carolina on a six-game win streak that propelled them into College Football Playoff contention.
At last night’s Steve Spurrier Awards ceremony in Gainesville, Florida, Sellers received the prestigious award from former South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier. His current head coach, Shane Beamer, was in attendance to witness the moment and later took to social media to celebrate his young quarterback.

“Congrats to @LanorriSellers!! Awesome being in Gainesville tonight to see him accept this amazing honor 🤙🏻@GamecockFB,” Beamer posted on X (formerly Twitter).
A Season to Remember for Sellers
Beamer’s praise comes as no surprise, given both his strong connection with his players and Sellers’ exceptional performance throughout the season. Even after missing a game and a half due to an ankle injury suffered against LSU, Sellers put up impressive numbers:
- 2,534 passing yards
- 18 passing touchdowns
- 7 interceptions
- 674 rushing yards
- 7 rushing touchdowns
At times, Sellers was the Gamecocks’ primary offensive weapon, especially in South Carolina’s rivalry showdown against Clemson. His dominant performance helped bring the Palmetto Trophy back to Columbia, cementing his status as a rising star.
Against Clemson, Sellers showcased his physicality, breaking 18 tackles and bulldozing through defenders for two rushing touchdowns. After a slow start to the year, he found his groove as the Gamecocks’ starting quarterback, demonstrating both his passing precision and rushing ability.
Bright Future Ahead
With year two as a starter on the horizon and Shane Beamer assembling a strong supporting cast for 2025, Gamecock fans are eager to see their dynamic quarterback take the field once again. If his freshman campaign was any indication, Sellers is poised for an even bigger breakout season.
