CONGRATULATIONS: From South Carolina Gamecock to Florida Gators Support Staff

Steve Spurrier Jr. Returns to Florida, Joins Gators Staff in Support Role

Steve Spurrier Jr., a seasoned college football assistant and former South Carolina coach, is making his way back to familiar territory. According to On3 Sports, Spurrier Jr. has officially joined the Florida Gators’ staff in a support role, returning to the program where his father, Steve Spurrier, became a legendary figure as both a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback and a national championship-winning coach.

Spurrier Jr.’s South Carolina Legacy

From 2005 to 2015, Spurrier Jr. was a key figure at South Carolina, working under his father and playing a vital role in developing some of the Gamecocks’ most dynamic receivers. During his tenure, he helped shape stars like:

  • Alshon Jeffery
  • Deebo Samuel
  • Pharoh Cooper
  • Sidney Rice
  • Kenny McKinley

His coaching responsibilities in Columbia were extensive, including roles as wide receivers coach, passing game coordinator, recruiting coordinator, and co-offensive coordinator.

A Familiar Connection to Florida’s Coaching Staff

While Spurrier Jr. is best known as the son of Florida legend Steve Spurrier, he has his own ties to the Gators’ offensive staff. In 2004, he worked alongside quarterbacks coach Ryan O’Hara at Arizona, and now, the two will reunite in Gainesville, where Spurrier Jr. will assist in the quarterbacks room and contribute in various areas of the program.

Successful Stint at Tulsa Before Florida Move

Before heading to Florida, Spurrier Jr. spent the last two seasons at Tulsa, where he served as offensive coordinator and associate head coach. Under his leadership, Tulsa’s offense ranked in the top 35 nationally in several key categories:

  • Rushing offense
  • Red zone efficiency
  • Third-down conversions
  • Passing yards per completion

However, after head coach Kevin Wilson was fired in November, new head coach Tre Lamb decided to go in a different direction, bringing in Brad Robbins as offensive coordinator.

Back in Gainesville: A New Chapter with the Gators

Now back at Florida, Spurrier Jr. is set to bring his wealth of experience and offensive expertise to Billy Napier’s staff as the Gators look to build for the future.

For Spurrier Jr., this move is more than just a return—it’s a chance to help shape Florida’s next era, working at the school where his father left an unforgettable legacy.
