Five-star Agot Makeer commits to Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks

In a significant boost to their recruiting class, the South Carolina Gamecocks have secured a commitment from Agot Makeer, the No. 4-ranked recruit in the Class of 2025. Makeer, a five-star wing standing at 6-foot-1, announced her decision on Saturday, choosing South Carolina over prominent programs like UConn and Michigan State.

Originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Makeer currently showcases her talents at Montverde Academy in Florida. Her commitment marks the second top-25 recruit for South Carolina’s 2025 class, joining Ayla McDowell, the No. 22-ranked player from Cypress, Texas, who committed in October 2024.

Both Makeer and McDowell have earned spots in the 2025 McDonald’s All-American Game, with Makeer set to play for the East team and McDowell for the West.

South Carolina’s head coach, Dawn Staley, has a history of attracting top-tier talent, and Makeer’s addition further solidifies the Gamecocks’ standing as a powerhouse in women’s college basketball. Staley’s recent recruitment success includes landing Joyce Edwards, the No. 1 recruit in the 2024 class.

As the Gamecocks prepare for the 2025-26 season, they will bid farewell to seniors Sakima Walker, Sania Feagin, Te-Hina Paopao, and Bree Hall, all of whom will have exhausted their eligibility. The influx of elite talent like Makeer and McDowell is expected to play a pivotal role in maintaining South Carolina’s competitive edge in the seasons to come.

Makeer’s commitment also signifies a rare recruiting miss for UConn, marking only the second time since 2002 that the Huskies have not signed a McDonald’s All-American for their incoming class. Despite this, UConn has secured commitments from other notable players, including Kelis Fisher (ranked 27), Gandy Malou-Mamel (ranked 73), and Blanca Quiñonez, an international prospect from Ecuador.

With Makeer now officially on board, Coach Staley and the Gamecocks continue to build a formidable roster, aiming to sustain their dominance in women’s college basketball.
