Mystical ‘4’ Connects Gamecocks’ Final Four Run: Players Embrace Symbolism Ahead of Texas Clash
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) — If you believe in signs or numerology, the number four might just be the Gamecocks’ lucky charm heading into this year’s Final Four. From quirky coincidences to deep symbolism, the number 4 has been woven into South Carolina’s postseason journey in uncanny ways.
For starters, South Carolina will face Texas for the fourth time this season — something rarely seen in college basketball.
“I mean, it’s weird, yeah, like it doesn’t really happen, to be honest,” said Joyce Edwards, standout freshman forward. “Both teams know each other so well. It’s to the point where it’s all about those extra efforts you can’t scout.”
The number shows up again and again: The Gamecocks have had four different leading scorers across their four NCAA Tournament games. In the Birmingham Regional, they trailed both Maryland and Duke heading into the fourth quarter, only to storm back and win each game — by exactly four points.
And the Final Four itself? It’s happening on April 4th — the fourth day of the fourth month.
“Honestly, it’s the first time I’m hearing of it. You said that, but I’m gonna take it in a good way,” said Tessa Johnson, sophomore guard. “God is throwing signs to us. That’s how I take it.”
Even players who claim not to be superstitious are starting to feel the pull of the number.
“I mean, I never thought about it like that, but once you see all that, it’s definitely a great sign,” added Chloe Kitts, junior forward. “I’m not a superstitious person, but my team is, so I feel like I’m getting a little bit more superstitious.”

For Sania Feagin, the number carries deep personal meaning. One of three Gamecocks making their fourth-straight Final Four appearance, Feagin has embraced the symbolism so fully that she even tattooed it on her hand.
“444,” her tattoo reads — a tribute to faith and destiny.
“To always have faith and understanding that everything’s gonna come back for me,” she explained.
“We’re grateful, we understand what it takes to get here. It’s amazing to be here, and for it to be my fourth one, it feels really good,” Feagin added.
With a win over Texas, South Carolina would advance to the championship game with a chance to claim their fourth national title — and further solidify the number four as the defining symbol of their 2024 run.
