“MiLaysia Fulwiley Breaks Silence on Dawn Staley Just Before Shocking Transfer Portal Move”

MiLaysia Fulwiley had only admiration for Dawn Staley after South Carolina’s heartbreaking loss in the National Championship game—even as she made the surprising announcement that she’s entering the transfer portal.

After spending two seasons with the Gamecocks, Fulwiley will move on, leaving behind a legacy that includes a National Championship title in her freshman year and a runner-up finish in her sophomore season.

Seen as a rising star in college hoops, Fulwiley served primarily in a bench role due to South Carolina’s stacked and experienced backcourt. Although she was expected to step into a starting spot next season, she’s chosen to pursue a new opportunity elsewhere.

The decision shocked many fans and analysts alike, considering her trajectory within the program and her chance to shine in 2025. While some speculated about potential tensions with Coach Staley, Fulwiley put those rumors to rest with heartfelt praise for her time at South Carolina.

“I think my growth has been tremendous. I think I’ve grown in lots of places where I didn’t even know I could grow in,” Fulwiley shared.
“I’m just glad to be here in a program where the coaches are very open and very direct with what they want and need from each and every one of us.”

She continued,

“I think I kind of just took what they were saying, and I had to understand that it’s either I do it or I don’t. I felt like I wanted to do it. It’s been working for me lately. So the standard that Dawn has got here is great, and I think every player should want to play under this standard.”

“It just brings out the best in each and every one of us, and I think it definitely brings out the best in me.”

Despite Staley often praising Fulwiley’s electrifying talent, her minutes decreased during the 2024–25 campaign, sometimes logging under 10 minutes per game. With two years of eligibility remaining, Fulwiley now enters the transfer portal with plenty of interest expected from top programs nationwide.

Her next destination remains to be seen, but what’s certain is that her talent—and the maturity she’s shown through this decision—will make her a coveted addition wherever she lands.
