SOUTH CAROLINA WBB: “Winston Gandy Makes a Power Move — And He’s Taking This Gamecock With Him!”

South Carolina Staff Shakeup: Winston Gandy and Chloe Rice Head West to Grand Canyon

South Carolina women’s basketball is saying goodbye to two familiar faces. Winston Gandy, a trusted assistant under Dawn Staley, has officially been named the new head coach at Grand Canyon University, taking over after a five-year run under Molly Miller.

Gandy becomes the fourth head coach in Grand Canyon’s program history since making the jump to Division I.

And he’s not going alone.

According to an official release from the school, Gandy is bringing Chloe Rice, South Carolina’s assistant recruiting coordinator, with him to Phoenix. Rice will now serve as an assistant coach on Gandy’s new staff with the Lopes.

A Winning Legacy in Columbia

Chloe Rice spent the last three seasons in Columbia, helping guide the Gamecocks to incredible success — including three Final Four appearances and one National Championship. She worked alongside Gandy for two of those seasons.

Her coaching career began at South Carolina as a graduate assistant, a role she held for two years before being promoted to assistant recruiting coordinator during the most recent offseason.

During her tenure, South Carolina was nothing short of dominant. The team went an astounding 109-5 overall, losing just one SEC game in that span — making them the winningest program in women’s college basketball during that time.

Rice’s Path to Coaching

Before stepping into coaching, Rice was a player herself, suiting up for St. Louis and Bradley at the collegiate level. She later earned her graduate degree from the University of South Carolina — laying the foundation for her rise through the coaching ranks.

Now, with her move to Grand Canyon, Rice reunites with Gandy and begins a new chapter in her fast-rising career.
