Dawn Staley Shares Heartfelt Response to Magic Johnson Following Major Achievement

Dawn Staley Adds Another Triumph to Her Legendary Career with “Uncommon Favor”

Dawn Staley, head coach of South Carolina women’s basketball, continues to reinforce her legacy as one of the most accomplished and respected figures in the sport.

After guiding the Gamecocks to yet another incredible season that culminated in a hard-fought national championship game against the UConn Huskies, Staley took a well-deserved break. But her time away from the court didn’t slow her momentum—instead, she added a new accolade to her résumé: becoming a published author.

Her memoir, titled “Uncommon Favor”, chronicles her remarkable journey—from growing up in the tough streets of Philadelphia to becoming a star college athlete, WNBA pioneer, and three-time national championship-winning coach at South Carolina.

In celebration of the book’s release, Staley shared copies with several legendary figures in basketball, including NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson. Grateful for the gesture, Johnson took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his appreciation:

“Thank you Coach @dawnstaley for gifting me a copy of your new book Uncommon Favor! Congratulations and keep blessing the world.”

Staley responded with heartfelt gratitude of her own:

“It’s all love Magic!! Thank you for your leadership in every space you have touched! Keep leading! Keep smiling! Keep being magically you!!!”

“Uncommon Favor” offers insight into the challenges and triumphs that shaped Staley’s life and coaching career, emphasizing how faith, resilience, and community molded her into a leader who inspires on and off the court.

Since taking the reins at South Carolina in 2008, Staley has transformed the program into a dominant force in college basketball. Under her leadership, the Gamecocks have captured three national championships, reached seven Final Fours, and claimed nine SEC regular-season and nine SEC Tournament titles.

With each season and new achievement, Dawn Staley continues to rewrite what’s possible—not only for herself but for the generations of women following in her footsteps.
