“Gamecocks Star Ashlyn Watkins Shocks Fans with 2025-26 Season Decision!”

Ashlyn Watkins to Sit Out 2025-26 Season, Eyes Comeback with Gamecocks in 2026

Ashlyn Watkins, one of South Carolina’s most athletic and impactful forwards, has officially announced she will not play during the 2025-26 season. The rising senior made the announcement via Instagram, explaining her decision to step away from basketball for personal growth and recovery.

“With everything that’s happened this year, I’m going to take some time off to focus on myself, my faith, and my family, so that I can grow as an individual and attempt to master this journey of life,” Watkins wrote.

She also shared her gratitude toward the South Carolina program and those who have supported her through a challenging year.

“I’m so grateful for my coaches, the USC medical team, my teammates, and everyone who’s supported me along the way,” she continued. “For now, I’ll be cheering on my team and working hard to come back even stronger in the 2026-27 season.”

A Tough Year for Watkins

Watkins’ junior season was derailed early. She suffered a torn ACL on January 5 during a game against Mississippi State, ending her season after just 14 games. She also missed the Gamecocks’ season opener due to a suspension following an offseason arrest.

Despite the challenges, head coach Dawn Staley remained optimistic. At the 2025 Final Four, she shared that Watkins was making good progress in rehab and hinted at a possible summer return. However, it became clear that Watkins wouldn’t be ready to return at full strength when the season tips off.

A Defensive Force

Before the injury, Watkins was one of the team’s top contributors. In 2024, she averaged 9.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, and a team-leading 2.4 blocks per game, earning Second-Team All-SEC honors. Her 20-rebound performance in the Final Four against NC State set a school record and showcased her dominance on the glass.

In 2025, she averaged 7.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks through 14 games.

At 6-foot-3, Watkins made history as the only player in program history to dunk in a game—a feat she’s accomplished four times. Her shot-blocking and rebounding made her South Carolina’s defensive anchor during their undefeated 2023–24 season, and her absence last year was deeply felt.

Looking Ahead

Though she won’t be on the court this season, Watkins still has one year of eligibility remaining. With time to fully heal and recharge mentally, she plans to return in 2026-27—stronger, more focused, and ready to rejoin a South Carolina team that will surely welcome her back with open arms.
