Geoff Collins Joins South Carolina Football Staff Ahead of 2025 Season
Just weeks before the 2025 college football season kicks off, South Carolina has added a major piece to its coaching staff. Former Georgia Tech head coach Geoff Collins is set to join the Gamecocks on the defensive side, bringing a wealth of experience to Columbia.
Though most programs finalize their staffs earlier in the offseason, South Carolina seized the opportunity to add a veteran coach with head coaching experience. Collins, who got his first defensive coordinator role in 2010 at Florida International (FIU), quickly climbed the ranks. After one year at FIU, he moved to Mississippi State as co-defensive coordinator before taking over the defense at Florida in 2015. He then became the head coach at Temple from 2017 to 2018 and led the Georgia Tech program from 2019 to 2022.

Collins’ deep coaching résumé includes extensive experience in the SEC, which could be invaluable for a Gamecocks squad looking to rebuild its defense. After losing several key contributors on that side of the ball this offseason, Shane Beamer’s staff is counting on Collins to stabilize and enhance their defensive unit.
With the season opener against Virginia Tech set for August 31 in Atlanta, all eyes will be on how this newly bolstered staff performs. The game carries personal significance for head coach Shane Beamer, who played and coached at Virginia Tech and is the son of legendary Hokies coach Frank Beamer.
Geoff Collins’ addition gives South Carolina not just experience, but a potential edge as they gear up for a pivotal season.
