Shane Beamer names South Carolina’s backup quarterback as fall camp begins

The South Carolina Gamecocks are officially back in action, as fall camp kicks off in Columbia and the countdown to the 2025 season opener begins. One key question lingering throughout the offseason has finally been answered by head coach Shane Beamer: Who will be the backup to starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers?

While Sellers is firmly entrenched as the Gamecocks’ QB1 heading into a crucial campaign, the No. 2 quarterback spot had remained uncertain—until now. Beamer confirmed this week that senior Luke Doty currently holds that role.

“Luke’s got the most experience,” Beamer said during a practice media session. “If we played Virginia Tech tomorrow, and LaNorris had to come out of the game for a play, Luke would be the next quarterback in the game as we stand here today.”

Doty’s name is a familiar one around Columbia. A fifth-year senior, he’s been with the Gamecocks since 2020 and has appeared in 19 games—starting multiple times under center. Over his career, Doty has thrown for 1,243 yards, nine touchdowns, and eight interceptions. While he’s transitioned into a wide receiver role over the past two seasons, he’s remained ready to step in at quarterback whenever needed.

Beyond his on-field versatility, Doty is widely praised for his leadership and unselfish mindset, embodying the kind of veteran presence Beamer values.

The Gamecocks will kick off their 2025 season against Virginia Tech in the Aflac Kickoff Game on Sunday, August 31. The showdown at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta is set for a 3:00 p.m. ET kickoff on ESPN.
