United Chaos! Six Starting Spots Up for Grabs vs City

United May Rotate Squad Against City Amid Injury Concerns

Manchester United are set to face Manchester City at Wembley this weekend, marking their second encounter of the year in what promises to be another gripping showdown. Following their surprising 2-1 victory over City in the FA Cup final, United will aim to prove that their previous win was no mere fluke.

Despite this, City are the favorites, seeking their first Community Shield since 2019 after falling short in the last two editions. Both teams have been on pre-season tours in the USA, but they will meet for the first time this summer in London on Saturday.

United’s preparations have been hampered by injuries and late returns, potentially leading to a rotated lineup. Several players who impressed during pre-season tours will be vying for starting positions, though their readiness remains uncertain.

Defensive Options:
Centre-back Leny Yoro, who would have been a key player, is sidelined with a metatarsal injury, leaving both centre-back spots up for grabs. Lisandro Martinez, who only resumed training on Monday after his Copa America duties, may not be fit enough to start. Consequently, Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans, and Harry Maguire could be in line for a starting role alongside Martinez if he isn’t match-ready.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s involvement could offer clues about his future at United amid ongoing transfer speculation. With Luke Shaw returning late due to England’s Euro 2024 run, Wan-Bissaka might fill in at right-back, with Diogo Dalot shifting to left-back if Shaw isn’t fit.

Midfield Dynamics:
Kobbie Mainoo, who had extended leave due to England’s tournament progress, will add depth to the midfield upon his return. If he’s not match-fit, Erik ten Hag might favor pre-season regulars. Scott McTominay, who has attracted interest from Fulham and West Ham, or Mason Mount could partner with Casemiro, who is expected to anchor the midfield. Christian Eriksen, Hannibal Mejbri, and Dan Gore are also in contention, though they seem less likely to start.

Attacking Options:
With Rasmus Hojlund sidelined for six weeks, United face a dilemma in attack. New signing Joshua Zirkzee, who has been training individually at Carrington, could be a candidate to lead the line, though he might not yet be fully integrated. Jadon Sancho, known for his versatility, could be deployed as a false nine, with Marcus Rashford potentially starting on the left wing rather than central.

Alejandro Garnacho, who returned late from Copa America with Argentina, might be edged out by Rashford. Amad, who impressed with his performances and two pre-season goals, is a strong contender for a start on the right wing. Antony, whose form has been inconsistent, may have a tough season ahead, with Amad seen as having a higher ceiling and potential to make an impact, though he is unlikely to start against a solid Man City defense.
