Ruben Amorim will officially take the reins at Manchester United following his last game managing Sporting, set against Braga on Sunday. Viktor Gyokeres confirmed that Amorim will be joined by several of his Sporting staff members at United.
Amorim, who assumes his new role at United on November 11, will wrap up his time with Sporting after an away match versus Braga on November 10. In his farewell home game, Sporting celebrated a decisive 4-1 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League, with Gyokeres scoring a hat-trick and Maximiliano Araujo also contributing to the scoreboard.
Though Amorim’s exact backroom setup at United remains under wraps, reports suggest he’ll bring four coaches and a sports scientist along from Sporting. Gyokeres expressed his thoughts on the manager’s departure, saying, “We will miss him a lot. We’ve done amazing things together. We will miss him and the other guys in the staff who will leave. We have to look forward and attack the next challenge ahead of us.”
Reflecting on his performance, Gyokeres added, “It’s always nice to score and even better to score a hat-trick. Most important was to win the game, so it was a brilliant night for us. We knew it was going to be tough and we didn’t start off well. We knew they would give us space, and we could have scored more than four, to be fair. They could have scored more as well. You need to raise your level when you play better opponents. I tried to keep doing what I’ve been doing.”
Amorim downplayed the match’s significance in terms of what lies ahead, noting, “What I can tell you is that this [result] doesn’t mean anything in particular – don’t take anything from this. We cannot transport one reality to another. Manchester United cannot play the way we play, and we will have to adapt.”
He added, “[The result] is misleading, we were very lucky today, but the feeling with my players, the way they celebrate with the fans was very special. I take this with me, but when I arrive in the Premier League, it is a different world, different pressure. It will be fun, very fun, and I’m ready for the challenge.”
