VAR overturned Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli’s opening goal against Everton at Goodison Park. The Gunners believed they had taken a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute, but VAR determined that Eddie Nketiah was offside when he received the ball in the lead-up to Martinelli’s goal.
Prior to the ball deflecting off an Everton player, Nketiah was ruled to be offside from Gabriel’s initial pass.
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, a Sky Sports commentator, expressed confusion over the decision to rule out the goal and questioned the use of VAR’s camera angle.
Neville commented during the game, “Well, he’s [Nketiah] not offside.
That choice will not be made for Everton.
They’re a bit high up, and Martinelli punishes them.
Everton simply waited to lose during the first 20 minutes of the game, and if they keep playing this way, they will lose.
“[That finish] is a Thierry Henry finish!”.
“Well even I am a little confused,” Neville said in response to VAR’s decision.
“I thought he looked well behind the line there.
Was there not a better camera angle available to them [VAR]?
“I find that one to be odd.
It appeared to me to have been worn by an Everton player.
I anticipated a better angle than the one they just used for VAR because there are so many cameras buried in the ground. Erik ten Hag has reportedly voiced his displeasure with that in the past, but that’s a very strange one, to be honest.
That blue line is a little bit of speculation in my opinion because Mykolenko appears to be behind Nketiah.”.
Martinelli, who appeared to have a muscle injury, had to be replaced after the goal was disallowed.
Leandro Trossard replaced the injured Brazilian winger in attack as he immediately walked down the tunnel after receiving treatment on the field.
After a six-year absence, Arsenal has rejoined the Champions League.
