Manchester City Set for £40m Windfall as Sergio Gomez Nears Real Sociedad Move
Manchester City’s summer earnings are on the brink of rising to nearly £40 million, with defender Sergio Gomez inching closer to a permanent transfer to Real Sociedad.
Gomez, originally arriving from Anderlecht in 2022 as a winger, was brought in to provide cover at left-back. Despite City’s historic treble-winning season during his first year, he struggled to secure regular playing time. Last season, Gomez’s situation worsened, as he managed only six league appearances, totaling a mere 47 minutes on the pitch.
At 23, the lifelong City fan has decided it’s time to move on permanently. According to numerous reports from Spain on Thursday night, his transfer to Sociedad is nearing completion.
The reports indicate that Gomez will depart for a fee of £8 million, marking a £3 million loss for City over two years. However, the deal is likely to include a substantial 25% sell-on clause and possibly a buy-back option for Gomez, providing City with future financial benefits.
Should the £8 million figure be accurate, it would bring City’s total summer earnings to approximately £39 million. This includes proceeds from the departures of Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Lewis Fiorini, and Tommy Doyle, as well as the sell-on clause from Douglas Luiz’s move from Aston Villa to Juventus.
With Gomez’s exit, City still have strong options at left-back, including Josko Gvardiol and Nathan Ake. Additionally, the club can test academy players for further coverage during pre-season in Gomez’s absence. Gomez, who has been called up to the Spanish squad for the Olympics this summer, was already set to miss City’s USA tour.
This move marks a significant moment for both Gomez and Manchester City as they continue to reshape their squad and finances ahead of the new season.
