As he completes his £53 million transfer from Wolves, Nunes maintains that he ‘couldn’t turn down’ Man City.

Following days of negotiations between the Premier League clubs, Matheus Nunes of Wolves has signed a five-year contract with Manchester City.

Both clubs were able to reach an agreement on a £53million move, a club-record sale for Wolves, after resolving a few minor issues during final negotiations over an initial £47.3m deal on Wednesday night.

When Nunes left Sporting Lisbon for Wolves last summer for an initial £38 million on a five-year contract with an additional 12-month option, he set a new club record for signings.

The 25-year-old international from Portugal, who was eager to move to the Etihad Stadium, skipped Wolves’ training sessions in order to expedite the transfer.

“I’m so happy to be joining Manchester City, the champions of Europe and a club I’ve admired for a long time,” Nunes said on the team’s official website.

“I couldn’t pass up the chance to work for Pep Guardiola, one of the greatest managers in history, and with some of the best players in the world.

“I’ve gained so much knowledge during my time at Wolves, and I’m eager to keep growing in the Premier League, which brings out the best in me.

“I’m really eager to get started, get to know the supporters, and hopefully be a part of lots more success at City.”.

Tommy Doyle, a 21-year-old midfielder, moves the other way, signing a season-long loan deal with Molineux with the option of making it permanent in the summer.

Cole Palmer, another City academy graduate who has signed a seven-year contract with Chelsea, left the team before Doyle did.

According to the PA news agency, Chelsea will make a base payment of £40 million for the 21-year-old with a potential add-on payment of another £2.15 million.

According to reports, a deal for a player who City wanted to keep but ultimately decided to sell due to the size of Chelsea’s offer was reached on Wednesday.
