Premier League hot topics include Man City, Man United, and others.
Following a two-week international break, the Premier League will resume this weekend, and after the opening rounds of the season, fans will have plenty to discuss.
It could be argued that everything is following form, as title favorites Manchester City lead the early standings, with promoted Burnley and Luton Town occupying the bottom two spots in the league table and both teams being useless.
But who would have predicted that Newcastle United, who finished fourth last season, would lag in 14th place while moneybags Spurs stormed into second place?
However, a lot can happen between now and May.
So what pressing issues need to be resolved before the weekend’s start?
Can a team unseat Manchester City?
I doubt it.
Erling Haaland, the league’s leading scorer with six goals, has helped City win its first four games of the year.
Sadly, they haven’t yet reached their peak performance. Indeed, they had to beat promoted Sheffield United with a late Rodri goal.
Even though Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gündogan’s departures from Manchester to play for Al-Ahli of the Saudi Pro League and Barcelona of LaLiga, respectively, and Kevin De Bruyne’s injury, Pep Guardiola’s team still appears to be a cut above the rest of the competition.
The trip to West Ham on Saturday will be a big test for City, but you expect them to succeed.
Is Liverpool’s comeback for real?
Keeping Mohamed Salah (188 goals in 309 games) away from his Saudi Arabian suitors strengthens their challenge after an undefeated start to the season, though it’s too early to say. The incredible victory at Newcastle, where they overcame a one-goal deficit to triumph thanks to two late goals from Darwin Nez, spoke of a spirit and tenacity that may have been lacking for a while.
And Liverpool made a statement by defeating a dangerous Aston Villa 3-0 while maintaining a clean sheet.
Defensive lapses are still under scrutiny, but Liverpool is still winning despite it so far.
Manager Jurgen Klopp might believe his team has the firepower and a new-look midfield (Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Wataru Endo) to capitalize on any mistakes made by Manchester City.
Can Spurs maintain their status as the season’s biggest surprise?
With 10 points out of a possible 12 for Spurs, the team has had an outstanding start.
It also appears that new manager Ange Postecoglou is already a cult favorite among Tottenham supporters, who had grown weary of the tedious football played under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
They have scored a league-high 11 goals despite missing the prolific goal scorer Harry Kane, who left for Bayern Munich this summer.
Son Heung-min’s hat-trick against Burnley may have been the beginning of better things for the South Korean international as James Maddison is providing the creative spark.
To continue their pursuit of long-overdue hardware, Tottenham must properly replace Kane in January. While that process is ongoing, they are a team to keep an eye on, and it will be interesting to see if their new, adventurous approach, which is known as “Ange Ball,” can withstand future challenges.
Is Arsenal capable of winning the title once more?
After a thrilling last-second victory over Manchester United, the Gunners travel to Everton on Sunday.
The team of Mikel Arteta is only two points off the lead and is desperate to make up for their last season’s collapse, during which they allowed an eight-point lead to slip in the final weeks.
However, therein lies a danger: At times, Arsenal has appeared almost overly fired up, playing with such a high intensity that you wonder if they’ll burn out at the crunch time of the season.
Also up for debate are whether Kai Havertz is the team’s weak link and whether Arteta, who has a tendency to switch up his starting lineups, will think himself out of the title race.
In the end, Arsenal will need to demonstrate a little bit more than they have so far if they want to maintain their lead.
Why is Manchester United failing?
quite a bit. For some reason, they have looked underdeveloped and passive to begin the season, and the problems involving Mason Greenwood, Jadon Sancho, and Antony have only served to exacerbate the uneasy atmosphere at Trafford.
This kind of matchup is far from what they need right now, but manager Erik Ten Hag hopes to jumpstart the team’s season with a victory against a confident Brighton on Saturday.
Sofyan Amrabat, a defensive midfielder on loan from Serie A team Fiorentina, will energize the midfield and add much-needed solidity if his back injury heals quickly.
Although United battled back from a poor start to finish in the top four last season, the going will be tougher this time around based on the early signs.
Newcastle’s bubble popped, you ask?
No. After defeating Villa 5-1 on the opening day, they temporarily lost their way, however, and have now dropped three straight games.
They clearly lost confidence after the shocking loss to Liverpool in a game they had been dominating.
It won’t be an easy recovery process to play Brentford at home on Saturday.
Newcastle will play their first Champions League match since the 2003–04 season on Tuesday at AC Milan, adding to the suspense. A victory away might lift everyone’s spirits.
Will Chelsea finally succeed?
Nowadays, Stamford Bridge sees more arrivals and departures than Heathrow Airport.
The new manager, Mauricio Pochettino, is working to assemble a group of players and a style of play that can revive the glory days somewhere amid all the player transfers.
However, the 0-1 home loss to Nottingham Forest served as a reminder that Chelsea are a team in transition.
There have been some encouraging signs in cameo appearances.
Reece James, their captain, needs to be made fit again most of all.
They have the foundation of a strong attacking team with him on one flank and Ben Chilwell on the other.
The coming together of all the moving parts might not happen until the new year.
What about the fight over relegation?
The relegation picture appears to be very crowded because a number of teams are having difficulties in the first month.
Burnley has started the season with three home losses despite being so dominant in winning the Championship last season to earn promotion.
They appear too flimsy in the top flight, so manager Vincent Kompany may need to adjust their daring strategy.
Luton needs something from their trip to Fulham on Saturday because they have lost all three of their games and have no points.
With the addition of creator Gustavo Hamer and striker Cameron Archer, the other promoted team, Sheffield United, appears to be a little more competitive.
Wolves’ inability to score will likely keep them worried about being demoted, but Everton, another team in danger of being demoted, could improve with the addition of Beto and Arnaut Danjuma.
In addition, they have Dwight McNeil and Jack Harrison waiting in the wings to provide additional thrust.
