The first goal Jeremy Doku has scored for Manchester City is a true masterpiece.
Doku scored his first goal for his new team on Saturday after moving from Rennes to the Premier League champions for £550.5 million in the summer transfer window.
The 21-year-old countered James Ward-Prowse’s opening goal against West Ham United after having an outstanding first half.
The Belgian winger was found by Julian Alvarez, who then ran at Vladimr Coufal before cutting onto his right foot and scoring an incredible goal.
After scoring, Doku engaged in a “griddy” celebration.
Romelu Lukaku allegedly intervened to stop Jeremy Doku from signing with Chelsea.
Doku joined Premier League and Champions League champions Manchester City this summer in a high-profile move.
Doku’s transfer to the Etihad Stadium reportedly cost £55 million.
The Belgian winger’s situation, however, could have turned out very differently.
Doku began drawing interest from Premier League clubs when he was just 15 years old after making an impression while playing for Anderlecht.
Chelsea had expressed interest in the young winger, but according to Jean Kindermans, the director of Anderlecht’s academy, Lukaku was a key factor in delaying the transfer.
Kindermans told the Sunday Mirror, via the Evening Standard: “I remember talking to Romelu in my office about the difficulty in signing young players, especially Doku.
Romelu answered, “Come on, give me your phone; I’m going to call him.
A phone call is quickly forgotten, so I didn’t want to do that. Romelu persuaded Jeremy to stay instead, which I did.”.
I’ve got the video on my phone still, he continued. Romelu is heard on it giving the Doku family advice, such as “Hey, guys, stay with Anderlecht for a while, you’re good,” and other similar statements.”.
At the age of 16, Doku later made his professional debut for Anderlecht.
He joined the French team Rennes two years after that.
The Ligue 1 club’s 21-year-old had a string of outstanding performances, so City decided to sign him.
Doku expressed his excitement at joining the team, saying, “I’m very excited, like the Premier League is a league that I always watch with my dad and my brother, and on Sunday evening, Match of the Day.
“I’ll have to see, but I can tell you right now that I’m prepared.
However, I feel very assured.
I’m very confident in myself.
I therefore believe that we will be doing well with the assistance of the coaches, staff, and team.”.
