Following Charles Sagoe Jr.’s debut for Arsenal in the Carabao Cup, Mikel Arteta praised the “versatile” player.
Third Round of the Carabao Cup: Brentford vs. Arsenal.
After the teenager made an unplanned debut in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup victory over Brentford, Mikel Arteta was happy to give Charles Sagoe Jr. his first taste of first team action.
News about Arsenal, as well as analysis.
Due to a goal from Reiss Nelson, the Gunners defeated the Bees 1-0 and advanced to face West Ham in the fourth round.
Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and William Saliba were all rested from the starting XI, making it a significantly altered Arsenal team.
Sagoe Jr., a product of the academy, was included in the front three alongside Nelson and Eddie Nketiah, something Arteta was happy to do in recognition of the 19-year-old’s recent consistency in the youth teams.
‘Obviously, the context of the situation with many injured players helped that possibility.
But whenever we can, we need to look inside our academy and give people a chance,’ Arteta said at the press conference following the game.
‘Chaz was probably one of our under-23 team’s most dependable players for a while.
He has spent a lot of time training with us.
If we don’t give people opportunities now, when will we give our children opportunities?
I’m overjoyed that he had a positive experience.
‘.
He’s a winger,’ Arteta said in reference to Sagoe Jr. He is quite versatile in those positions because he plays off the right, off the left, and he has spent some time this season as a nine as well.
It’s great to have him around and watch as he grows.

Prior to the trip to Brentford, Sagoe Jr. had only ever appeared on the bench for one Europa League match.
Despite the fact that players like Saka, Martinelli, and Leandro Trossard are not anticipated to be sidelined for very long due to fitness concerns, he will be hoping that this is just the beginning of many opportunities to play for Arteta.
