Takehiro Tomiyasu recounts what an RC Lens player told him after he lost a crucial opportunity

Last night’s match between RC Lens and Arsenal saw Takehiro Tomiyasu blow a golden opportunity to score.

In yesterday’s Champions League match at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, the Arsenal lost 2-1.

Although Mikel Arteta’s men had many opportunities to score themselves, Lens definitely deserved the victory.

Tomiyasu took one of them.

At right-back yesterday, Takehiro Tomiyasu started for Arsenal instead of Ben White.

Despite playing more than 60 times for the club, the Japan international still hasn’t scored a goal while wearing a Gunners jersey.

Tomiyasu had a fantastic opportunity to score from a corner in last night’s second half. He ran into a cross while unmarked inside the box and shot directly at Lens goalkeeper Brice Samba.

Tomiyasu spoke with the official Arsenal website following the game.

In response to a question about his big opportunity, he stated: “The goalkeeper (Samba) told me it was a lucky moment because he didn’t react.

I’ll have to score the following one, but I needed to put it in the goal.

Missed chances end up being expensive.

Last night against Lens, Arsenal was far from at its best, but the Gunners still had a chance to score four or five goals if Takehiro Tomiyasu and a few others had taken advantage of their opportunities.

After Lens erred, Gabriel Jesus gave Arsenal the lead early on. Kai Havertz then had a good opportunity, but his shot was directly at the goalkeeper.

Leandro Trossard then displayed amazing skill to position himself for a shot, but Samba also blocked Trossard’s attempt.

The Lens stopper then blocked Tomiyasu’s attempt.

Arsenal suffered from not taking any of those chances. They simply cannot make the same error when they welcome Manchester City to the Emirates on Sunday.
