Manchester City could decide against offering Kevin De Bruyne a new contract at the Etihad, according to reports.
De Bruyne has been ruled out by Pep Guardiola since the opening day of the season with a groin injury and the 31-year-old is not expected to return until the New Year.
Despite back-to-back defeats to Wolves and Arsenal in the Premier League, City are coping with the Belgian’s absence.
The reigning champions returned to the top of the table on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Brighton thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland.
But while De Bruyne’s creativity will undoubtedly be missed, the midfielder’s days at the Etihad could be numbered following reports that the club could decide not to renew his contract.
Football Insider claimed: “There are concerns that De Bruyne’s injury problems are increasing in recent seasons.”
The publication said there was “no urgency” to discuss a contract extension, adding that negotiations could take place in around 12 months.
De Bruyne’s current contract, which has made him the highest-paid player in the Premier League, expires in 2026.
However, it said “there is a strong possibility that both sides will prepare for new negotiations depending on the situation.”
De Bruyne played in 49 games last season, scoring 10 goals and providing 31 assists.
The former Wolfsburg and Chelsea midfielder has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best players, but he will not be short of offers if City decide to cut ties.
