Pedri’s muscle issue extends Barca’s list of injuries.

Madrid, Dec. 20, (IANS) Pedri Gonzalez, a 21-year-old midfielder for Spain, will miss FC Barcelona’s final game of 2023 due to a muscle injury he sustained during Tuesday’s practice.

The midfielder from Canary Islands sustained a minor muscle injury during practice.

Thus, he will be added to the list of Barca’s injured players for their La Liga match against bottom-place Almeria on Wednesday, which Frenkie de Jong will also be missing due to suspension, along with Gavi, Inigo Martinez, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen, according to Xinhua.

Pedri has had injury problems this year, playing in just eight league games through the first 17 of the season, compared to 38 in the previous two.

He will probably be sidelined for two weeks due to the new injury, and he is unlikely to play on January 4 when his team travels to Las Palmas.

Xavi Hernandez, the coach of Barcelona, informed the media that the team is searching for a midfield replacement during the January transfer window.

We need a player with a similar profile because of Gavi’s [knee] injury, but finding one is challenging. We are trying to bolster the team. The Barcelona coach stated, “We will see what Financial Fair Play allows and we are working on it.” He also maintained that his team could overturn their respective nine- and seven-point deficits to Girona and Real Madrid, the top two teams in La Liga.

That is something we can get back, but we can’t make mistakes because we will pay a high price for them. We ought to have prevailed [on Saturday] in Valencia and have had a stronger second half to the season,” Xavi continued.
