Manchester City are gearing up for the new Premier League season, now just a week away, with Pep Guardiola aiming for another title triumph.
Following a dramatic Community Shield victory over Manchester United, where they came from behind to win in a penalty shootout, City are fine-tuning their preparations. Despite recent upheavals, such as Julian Alvarez’s imminent departure, City remain confident in their ability to adapt and strengthen their squad.
Ederson, another player rumored to be on the move, seems set to stay at the Etihad for the 2024/25 season. Amid ongoing speculation, here are some of the latest headlines surrounding City:
Ederson’s Commitment
Ederson has firmly stated his intention to remain with Manchester City, dismissing rumors of a potential exit. Despite interest from Saudi Pro League clubs, the Brazilian goalkeeper has committed to staying with City for “more years.”
After the Community Shield triumph, Ederson clarified his position to ESPN Brasil: “It’s settled. I’ve spoken with the coach, director, and my family. We’ve all decided that I’ll stay at City for more years. The media often exaggerates or fabricates stories. After discussing it with Guardiola, I’m entirely focused on City this season, aiming for more titles.”
MEN Sport Insight: City fans will be relieved to hear Ederson’s commitment, given his crucial role in recent successes. While Stefan Ortega could potentially step up as his replacement, Guardiola’s plans undoubtedly include retaining the experienced goalkeeper.
Alvarez’s Move
Julian Alvarez is set to join Atletico Madrid, with Rodrigo de Paul playing a pivotal role in persuading him to move. After City agreed to offload Alvarez, the midfielder’s influence was significant, especially during the Copa America. De Paul, who helped Argentina win the tournament, along with fellow Atletico and Argentina teammate Nahuel Molina, reportedly urged Alvarez to join them in Spain.
Spanish outlet Diario AS also notes that Diego Simeone’s son, Giuliano, was involved in encouraging Alvarez during the Olympics, with constant communication from his father.
MEN Sport Insight: While such recruitment tactics are common in football, Alvarez’s departure is a blow to City. However, this opens opportunities for younger talents within the squad, and although Alvarez will be missed, the team will adapt as the season progresses.
