Phil Foden and Savinho were notably absent from Manchester City’s lineup against West Ham in the Premier League.
Pep Guardiola had already hinted that Foden wouldn’t be part of the squad after he experienced discomfort during the opening game against Chelsea and didn’t feel fully fit in the match against Ipswich a week later. The aim is for him to be ready to face Brentford in two weeks, though it’s unclear if he will join the England squad in the meantime.
Savinho’s absence was more unexpected, especially since the Brazilian winger had started the first two matches and participated in training this week. Guardiola explained to Sky Sports that Savinho had a knee issue and didn’t feel right but should hopefully be back after the international break.
In their absence, Nico O’Reilly was promoted to the first team, taking a spot on the bench as Guardiola made only one change from the team that defeated Ipswich. Mateo Kovacic retained his place in the starting XI, while Jack Grealish replaced Savinho.
With Arsenal drawing 1-1 against Brighton earlier in the day, City had the chance to go two points clear at the top with a win. Arsenal’s Kai Havertz scored, but Declan Rice’s second yellow card proved costly as Joao Pedro equalized for Brighton.
