“My Dad’s a Legend, But I’m Ready to Make My Own History at Man City!”

Jaden Heskey on Forging His Path at Manchester City and Life as Emile Heskey’s Son

Manchester City has long been known for nurturing talent, and the Heskey name is the latest to shine at their academy. Jaden Heskey, son of former England international Emile Heskey, is determined to carve out his own legacy in football while acknowledging the weight of his family name.

“It’s normal,” Jaden says modestly about his unique upbringing. But few would call it “normal” to grow up with a father who earned 62 England caps and played at the highest level for years. Despite this, Jaden is focused on making his own name.

Rising Through the Ranks

Last season, Jaden captained Manchester City’s under-18 side before injuries fast-tracked him to the under-21s. While helping the youth team secure the FA Youth Cup, Jaden also scored in the final, showcasing his versatility. Initially a pure number nine, the 19-year-old has recently adapted to playing in midfield, where his box-to-box energy is drawing attention.

His younger brother Reigan Heskey has also been making waves. The taller but leaner sibling boasts an impressive 12 goals and six assists in 14 appearances this season, including a memorable late goal in the EFL Trophy. In one standout game, both brothers got on the scoresheet, with Jaden converting the decisive penalty after Reigan’s strike.

Reflecting on that moment, Jaden recalls: “It’s special to play with my brother. We’re both pushing each other to improve, and moments like that make it even better.”

Learning from a Legend

Though their father is a Premier League legend, Emile Heskey takes a hands-off approach to his sons’ development. “He comes to most games or watches them back if he can,” Jaden shares. “He doesn’t put too much pressure on us. When I was a striker, he gave tips about being in the box, but otherwise, it’s about working hard and staying focused.”

Emile recently echoed these sentiments, saying: “Jaden is a real team player with a box-to-box engine, while Reigan is trickier and more technical. I’m lucky they’re at one of the best academies for development. I let them enjoy the journey.”

A Taste of the First Team

Jaden’s progress earned him a call-up to City’s first team during their pre-season tour in the United States. He made his senior debut in a friendly against Barcelona in Orlando, a surreal experience for the teenager.

“Getting off the bus to screaming fans was crazy,” Jaden admits. “It was mainly for Haaland, of course, but being treated like a first-team player was amazing. The professionalism, concentration, and technical level in training were eye-opening.”

Recalling his debut, Jaden says: “The manager didn’t say much—just told me to get ready. My heart was pounding. I came on for Jack Grealish, and Jack told me to go and get a goal. It didn’t happen, but it was a special moment.”

Embracing the Pressure

Being Emile Heskey’s son comes with added scrutiny, but Jaden sees it as motivation. “It’s nice to hear the positive things people say about my dad. Of course, there’s pressure, but I focus on making my own name. My brother is doing the same, and we’re both determined to keep improving.”

Jaden already has one accolade his father never achieved—a Youth Cup medal. Laughing, he adds, “That’s the one I’ve got over him!”

What’s Next?

For now, Jaden remains focused on his development at City, adapting to his new midfield role while keeping an eye on his future. Whether his journey leads to first-team football at City or elsewhere, one thing is clear: the Heskey brothers are determined to build their own legacies in the game.
