Heartbreaking Tribute to Football-Loving Dad Who Tragically Collapsed After Match
A heartbroken mother has paid a moving tribute to her 27-year-old son, Jack Derbyshire, who tragically passed away after collapsing following a six-a-side football match in Tameside on Monday, November 18.
Jack, a devoted father to three-year-old Lyla and engaged to be married, was known for his love of life, family, and football. His devastated mother, Lianne, shared: “He absolutely adored his family. He doted on his daughter and just loved life. I still can’t quite believe what has happened.”
A Life Cut Short
Earlier this year, Jack was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, an irregular and rapid heartbeat, as well as dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a condition causing the heart to enlarge and weaken. An Apple smartwatch first flagged the irregularity, leading to medical investigations. He was awaiting surgery to fit an internal defibrillator.
Despite his condition, Jack’s passion for football endured. Lianne explained: “He absolutely loved football and told his doctors he didn’t want to give it up completely. They advised him to stop when tired and not to push himself.”
Jack had stepped away from 11-a-side games but continued participating in six-a-side matches, even setting up a league to stay connected with the game he loved. On Monday, after playing a short stint, he returned to his car to rest while friends watched another game. Tragically, they found him collapsed when they returned. Despite CPR and emergency services’ efforts, Jack could not be saved.
A Beloved Figure
Jack worked as an assistant manager at McDonald’s in Denton, alongside his younger brother, Tom, 20. He lived in Stalybridge with his fiancée Charlotte and their daughter. A lifelong Manchester City fan, Jack held a season ticket, often attending games with his father, Peter, and brother.
“He loved his family, football, and music,” Lianne said. “He was a big fan of Oasis and The K’s, always going to gigs. Football was his life, and he lived it to the fullest.” She also revealed the bittersweet note on his Christmas list: “At the top, he had written ‘a working heart.’ It was heartbreaking.”
A Community in Mourning
Tributes have poured in from friends, family, and colleagues. Many have shared fond memories and kind words, demonstrating the impact Jack had on those around him.
A GoFundMe page has been launched by Charlotte’s sister, Shannon, to support Charlotte and Lyla through this devastating time. Over £4,000 has been raised so far. The page reads: “Charlotte and Jack’s little girl Lyla has lost her daddy. We hope to give Charlotte the time she needs to grieve without worrying about finances. Any help is greatly appreciated.”

Honoring Jack’s Memory
A tribute to Jack is planned during Manchester City’s match against Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. Fans are being encouraged to participate in a minute’s applause during the 27th minute, symbolizing Jack’s age.
“The club has promised to help raise awareness of the tribute,” Lianne shared. “We want the crowd bouncing for Jack.”
Jack’s passion for life, football, and family will forever be remembered by those who loved him.
