Rodri Drops Hint About Future Plans, Teases Potential Retirement at Manchester City
Manchester City’s Rodri, fresh off his historic Ballon d’Or win, has hinted at the possibility of ending his career at the Etihad Stadium while reflecting on his journey and connection to the club.
The 28-year-old defensive midfielder, who made history as the first player in his position to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or since 1990, has been on a celebratory media tour, discussing various topics, including his career plans and ties to Spanish football.
In an interview with Cadena SER, Rodri shared his thoughts on his long-term future, saying he is not one to set “very long-term goals” but admitted that retiring at Manchester City could be a possibility.
“I’m not one to set myself very long-term goals, I’m going day by day, but it could be a possibility to end up there,” Rodri said. “I love football in England, the club is amazing, not only on a sporting level but also on a structural level.”
Rodri also expressed his affection for Spanish football, adding, “I’m very comfortable and feel very much loved, but Spain is my country. I’m keeping an eye on La Liga, the level of the teams is growing… I’ve been lucky enough to play in both competitions, to have the best coaches, and in that sense, I’m very happy.”
Contract Uncertainty Looms
Rodri’s current contract with Manchester City runs until the summer of 2027. However, the club is reportedly keen to renegotiate terms to secure his future at the Etihad. With his deal set to expire in the same summer as Pep Guardiola’s expected departure, along with potential exits for key players like Erling Haaland, fans are understandably eager for clarity.
Despite the uncertainty, it is unlikely Rodri will leave as a free agent. Manchester City is expected to open discussions over a new deal in the coming months, ensuring the midfield maestro remains at the heart of the team’s success.
For now, Rodri’s commitment to the club remains steadfast, and his recent comments suggest a deep connection to the ethos and structure of Manchester City. As he continues to cement his legacy, fans can look forward to seeing more of the Spanish star leading their midfield.
