“Ty Johnson Shocks Lions with Explosive ‘Revenge Game’ Performance After Being Cut Twice”

LIVE: TY JOHNSON SHINES IN CAREER PERFORMANCE AGAINST FORMER TEAM, THE DETROIT LIONS

Once written off as a sixth-round pick who was cut twice, Ty Johnson has found a home with the Buffalo Bills and proved his worth with a career-best performance in the Bills’ thrilling 48-42 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

The former Lion didn’t just make a statement — he delivered a performance that turned heads. Johnson racked up 114 receiving yards on five catches and added nine rushing yards on two carries, setting a personal best of 125 total scrimmage yards.

Big Plays Early

Johnson wasted no time making an impact. On Buffalo’s second offensive play, Johnson hauled in a stunning 33-yard over-the-shoulder catch, setting the tone for the game. A few plays later, on third-and-5, Josh Allen connected with him again for a 24-yard gain, bringing the ball to Detroit’s 6-yard line.

The Bills attempted to reward Johnson for his early heroics with a handoff near the goal line, but he was stopped just short, allowing Allen to finish the drive with a touchdown.

Deep Threat Continues

In the second quarter, Johnson continued to shine. During Buffalo’s first drive of the quarter, Allen found him again for a 31-yard reception along the sideline. Just two plays later, Johnson added another catch for seven yards, setting up a James Cook touchdown run to extend Buffalo’s lead.

Johnson’s contributions didn’t stop there. Opening the second half, he picked up four yards on a run, followed by another 19-yard reception on second-and-6, capping off his statistical contributions for the day.

Career Day

Johnson’s 114 receiving yards smashed his previous career high of 71, set during his time with the New York Jets. His 125 scrimmage yards also marked a personal best, surpassing the 117 yards he posted in 2021 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

A Journey of Resilience

Drafted in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Lions, Johnson appeared in 16 games as a rookie but was waived just two games into his second season. He found a new opportunity with the Jets, where he spent three seasons, appearing in 44 games and scoring his first four career touchdowns.

Despite showing promise as both a runner and receiver — averaging 4.5 yards per carry and 9.0 yards per reception — Johnson struggled to secure playing time in a crowded Jets backfield. With younger talents like Breece Hall and Michael Carter emerging, Johnson was eventually released.

Thriving with the Bills

Since joining the Buffalo Bills, Johnson has carved out a valuable role as a backup runner, receiving specialist, and special teams contributor. He averaged 4.4 yards per carry during last year’s playoffs and has now shown he can step up on the big stage.

On Sunday, Johnson not only showcased his skills but also proved that perseverance and hard work can lead to success, even for a 5-foot-10, 210-pound back who many overlooked.

As the Bills continue their push for the playoffs, performances like Johnson’s will only strengthen their offense, adding yet another weapon for Josh Allen and head coach Sean McDermott.
