Live Feed: Lions Linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin Returns to Practice Ahead of Playoff Push
The Detroit Lions received some much-needed positive injury news on Thursday, as linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin returned to practice. Reeves-Maybin, who has been on injured reserve since suffering a neck injury against the Green Bay Packers, now enters a 21-day evaluation period. The Lions can activate him at any time during this window, though it remains unclear when he will officially return to game action.
This development is surprising given head coach Dan Campbell’s cautious comments earlier this month. On December 9, Campbell said:
“Jalen Reeves-Maybin is better, but it’s just slow going right now. So, I don’t really know where he could be. There is a chance that we get him in a few weeks, there’s a chance that we don’t. So, it’s just kind of—it’s just where we’re at.”
A Crucial Return for a Depleted Linebacker Room
The Lions have been hit hard by injuries at the linebacker position. In addition to Reeves-Maybin, starters Derrick Barnes, Alex Anzalone, and Malcolm Rodriguez are all on injured reserve. Of the group, only Anzalone is expected to return this season.
Reeves-Maybin’s potential return couldn’t come at a better time. Along with Trevor Nowaske, who recently cleared concussion protocol, and newly signed linebacker Anthony Pittman, the Lions’ linebacker unit is starting to regain some familiar faces.
Filling the Gaps with New Additions
In recent weeks, the Lions have relied on midseason acquisitions like Ezekiel Turner, David Long, Kwon Alexander, and Jamal Adams to fill the void. However, the unit has struggled, particularly in pass coverage. Last week, the Lions allowed Bills running backs to amass eight catches for 156 yards and tight ends to add six catches for 95 yards.
Reeves-Maybin’s Impact
Reeves-Maybin is one of the Lions’ most reliable third-down and coverage linebackers, known for his ability to defend in space and make critical plays on special teams. His return could provide a significant boost as Detroit eyes a deep playoff run.
With a 21-day window to evaluate his readiness, the Lions have flexibility in bringing Reeves-Maybin back at the right time. As they gear up for the postseason, the veteran linebacker’s return could be a game-changer.
