South Carolina’s Citrus Bowl POWERHOUSE Players!

Live Update from Orlando: The Countdown to the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl

With just days remaining before the highly anticipated Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, both Illinois and South Carolina have arrived in sunny Orlando, ready to clash on New Year’s Eve.

In the modern era of college football, where star players often opt out of bowl games to prepare for the NFL Draft, the Illini emerge relatively unscathed. The sole opt-out for Illinois is standout receiver Pat Bryant, who is poised to hear his name called in the upcoming NFL Draft in April.

South Carolina finds itself in a similar situation. Only Kyle Kennard, the All-American edge rusher, has opted out for the Gamecocks. This leaves the rosters for both teams largely intact, setting the stage for a competitive matchup.

Let’s dive into the key players to watch as we approach kickoff at 2 p.m. on ABC.

South Carolina Offense

QB LaNorris Sellers

The 19-year-old quarterback, LaNorris Sellers, is as talented as they come. Reports suggest he has signed a $2.5 million NIL deal to stay with the Gamecocks next season—a testament to his immense value.

In his debut season as a starter, Sellers delivered 17 passing touchdowns and added seven more on the ground, including a signature victory over ACC champions Clemson.

Illinois’ defense has struggled against elite quarterbacks this season, with Penn State’s Drew Allar and Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel putting on clinics. Sellers will undoubtedly aim to exploit similar weaknesses in the Illini secondary.

RB Raheim ‘Rocket’ Sanders

Complementing Sellers in the backfield is running back Raheim ‘Rocket’ Sanders, a dynamic dual-threat. Sanders has racked up nearly 900 rushing yards, 300 receiving yards, and 13 total touchdowns this season.

Given Illinois’ difficulties against the run, expect South Carolina to lean heavily on Sanders. If he finds his rhythm early, it could open the door for Sellers to capitalize through the air.

Although Sanders has declared for the NFL Draft, there’s no indication he will skip the bowl game, meaning No. 5 should be ready to make an impact.

South Carolina Defense

DB Nick Emmanwori

Defensive back Nick Emmanwori is a turnover specialist and a formidable cover corner. With four interceptions this season—two returned for touchdowns—the former Freshman All-American has been a game-changer for South Carolina’s defense.

With Pat Bryant sidelined, Emmanwori will likely shadow Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer’s primary target, making him a key factor in this matchup. As an early-round NFL Draft prospect, Emmanwori will look to boost his stock further with a strong showing.

EDGE Dylan Stewart

With Kyle Kennard opting out, freshman edge rusher Dylan Stewart steps into the spotlight. Stewart, who has 6.5 sacks and three forced fumbles this season, will be tasked with pressuring Illinois’ quarterback.

The added attention from Illinois’ offensive line will test Stewart, but his performance could set the tone for South Carolina’s defensive front.

With both teams fielding they majority of their rosters, the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl promises to be an exciting contest. Stay tuned as we bring you live updates and insights from Orlando!
