“I did want to drive a little bit,” Knaus confessed during an appearance on Dinner with Racers. “I never really got a solid opportunity because my father was the driver. I had a couple of stints, but it wasn’t like I hopped in the car, and it was like, ‘Oh, that guy’s fast.’ None of that ever happened. People were really interested in me working on their cars.”
Despite his ambitions, Knaus found another outlet for his competitive spirit. “I got into motorcycles. I was doing some road racing and street racing, which filled that void for me,” he explained. Even as a high school student, Knaus demonstrated an extraordinary work ethic, balancing school, working on race cars, and holding a third-shift job.
The Path to NASCAR Supremacy
After high school, Knaus moved to North Carolina to chase his dreams. His early years in NASCAR saw him as part of the No. 24 team at Hendrick Motorsports in 1993, where he worked with Jeff Gordon and Ray Evernham, contributing to Gordon’s championship wins in 1995 and 1997. But Knaus’ ambitions stretched further—he wanted to lead.
In 2002, Knaus returned to Hendrick Motorsports as crew chief for rookie driver Jimmie Johnson and the No. 48 team. What followed was a historic run: seven Cup Series championships, including a record-breaking five consecutive titles from 2006 to 2010. His achievements place him second only to Dale Inman, the legendary crew chief with eight championships.

Now 53, Knaus has transitioned from being a crew chief to serving as the Vice President of Competition at Hendrick Motorsports. Despite stepping back from the pit box, his drive for excellence remains undiminished. He admits to mellowing since marrying Brooke in 2015 and becoming a father to Kipling and Vivienne, but his commitment to the sport remains steadfast.
Reflecting on his past, Knaus acknowledges he wasn’t always easy to work with. “I accept that I was once a jerk,” he shared. However, his relentlessness has always been fueled by a deep desire to excel.
