The Vikings are unlikely to sign cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. to a long-term contract.

Byron Murphy Jr.: The Crown Jewel of 2025 Free Agency?

As the 2025 NFL free agency period looms, Byron Murphy Jr. has positioned himself as the top young cornerback on the market. While Paulson Adebo of the New Orleans Saints recovers from a broken femur, Murphy is fully healthy—putting him in line for one of the biggest contracts of the offseason.

Minnesota’s Deadline Dilemma

On Tuesday, ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported a key development: Murphy and the Vikings agreed to push back the date his void years trigger, adding pressure on Minnesota to strike a long-term deal before free agency begins.

Here’s the catch: The Vikings paid Murphy $17.5 million over two seasons, but only $13.7 million counted against their cap in 2023-2024. The remaining cap hit will accelerate to 2025 as dead money unless an extension is reached.

By delaying the void date to March 11—just one day before the new league year begins
