OFFICIAL: Ta’Niya Latson is Transferring to South Carolina, and Dawn Staley States Ta’Niya Latson ‘Superpower’

Former Florida State Star Ta’Niya Latson, one of the most electric scorers in women’s college basketball, has made a headline-grabbing move following the end of the 2024-25 season—transferring to join the powerhouse South Carolina Gamecocks.

Latson, who led the entire NCAA in scoring with an eye-popping 25.2 points per game, was one of the most sought-after names in the transfer portal. Her strong ties to Gamecocks standout guard Raven Johnson instantly made South Carolina a top contender to land her. And on April 8, Latson made it official via Instagram: she’s headed to play for head coach Dawn Staley.

This transfer is a massive win for the Gamecocks, who often struggled to find consistent shot creators last season. With Latson’s arrival, South Carolina adds a high-octane offensive weapon capable of breaking down defenses on her own—something the team sorely missed.

The official team announcement came on April 16, and Coach Dawn Staley had nothing but praise for her new star recruit.

Ta’Niya has established herself in the college women’s game, and her accomplishments speak for themselves,” Staley said in a press release. “But the beauty of her game is not just her ability to score. She has another superpower in her ability to set her teammates up to score, and that’s just a dangerous combination for opposing teams.

Staley emphasized not only Latson’s offensive prowess but also her intangibles:

Ta’Niya is an incredible leader and, more importantly, a fierce competitor. We’re honored to be part of her journey.

Shortly after, Staley took to social media to amplify the welcome, posting on X (formerly Twitter):

Welcome welcome welcome Ta’Niya!! Thank you for joining our Gamecock family! I would say @GamecockWBB FAMs activate but you already gave her your special welcome! We can’t wait to get started!!

With Latson now in the fold, all eyes will be on South Carolina as they look to reload and contend for another national title in the 2025-26 season. Her dynamic scoring and playmaking could very well be the X-factor the Gamecocks need to stay atop the college basketball world.
