Dawn Staley Welcomes Wendale Farrow to South Carolina in Emotional Announcement: “We Struck Gold”
South Carolina women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley took to social media on April 18 to share a heartfelt and powerful announcement regarding the future of her program. In a move she described as transformative, Staley introduced Wendale Farrow as the newest assistant coach for the Gamecocks — a decision she’s calling nothing short of a golden opportunity.
“Birdies come in all sizes!! Welcome @DellyWEN to the Gamecock family!!! We can’t wait to get started with you!” Staley posted on X (formerly Twitter), urging the Gamecock WBB community to welcome their newest addition with open arms. “@GamecockWBB FAMs activate and give our guy some love!!!”
In an official press release, Staley doubled down on her praise, stating, “We struck gold in bringing Wendale into our Gamecock family.” She added, “He is an accomplished young coach who has been part of every aspect of successful programs, and that journey has made him a seasoned, complete coach—from Xs and Os to player development to recruiting to community service.”
Wendale Farrow arrives in Columbia following a successful four-year tenure with the Southern Cal Trojans, where he was instrumental in the team’s recent resurgence. Under his guidance, USC reached the NCAA Elite Eight, secured two top-5 finishes in the AP Poll, and clinched the 2024 Pac-12 Tournament Title.
Over the course of his 10-year coaching career, Farrow has helped teams secure six NCAA Tournament appearances. His eye for talent and ability to develop players is well proven, as six of his players at USC were selected in the WNBA Draft during his time in Los Angeles.
The timing of the hire is especially significant, as it comes on the heels of major roster moves for the Gamecocks. Star guard Ta’Niya Latson recently committed to the team, while MiLaysia Fulwiley, another key name, announced she would be entering the transfer portal.
