Indiana Fever guard Lexie Hull had fans buzzing on Friday night as she dropped a major life update—and she did it with just one emoji.
The 24-year-old rising WNBA star announced her engagement to longtime boyfriend Will Matthiessen by posting a black-and-white photo on her Instagram Story. In the image, Hull proudly flashed her engagement ring, letting a single heart emoji do all the talking.
The soon-to-be-married couple first met during their college days at Stanford University, where both were standout student-athletes. While Lexie Hull made her mark on the hardwood, Matthiessen starred on the baseball diamond and was later selected in the sixth round of the 2019 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He spent time playing in the minor leagues before shifting his focus to a new path — currently working as an analyst at Sapient Capital, according to his LinkedIn profile.
The engagement comes during a breakout year for Hull, who has been making headlines not just off the court but on it as well. She played a pivotal role alongside Caitlin Clark with the Indiana Fever, emerging as a key contributor. In the 2024 season, Hull averaged 19.7 minutes and 5.5 points per game, while leading the team with an impressive 47.1% shooting from three-point range.
Hull gave a lot of credit to her chemistry with Clark, saying:
“It’s just keeping my hands ready. Keep cutting, keep running the floor,” she said. “I think that’s what’s so great about playing with really great point guards — you do the hard work and they make the shots easy.”
In addition to her WNBA success, Hull also shined in the inaugural Unrivaled 3×3 league, helping lead Rose Basketball Club to a championship win this past March.
With her engagement and career both trending upward, 2025 is shaping up to be a milestone year for Lexie Hull. She and the Fever are set to open the new WNBA season on May 17 against the Chicago Sky at Gainbridge Fieldhouse — and fans will no doubt be watching her every move, both on and off the court.
