On April 30, 2025, the city of Columbia officially unveiled a stunning bronze statue honoring legendary University of South Carolina women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley. The emotional and celebratory ceremony took place downtown, just outside the Pastides Alumni Center, drawing a large and enthusiastic crowd.

In attendance were several high-profile figures, including new athletic director Jeremiah Donati, former football coach Steve Spurrier and his wife Jerri Spurrier, men’s basketball head coach Lamont Paris and his staff, as well as the entire South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team — a powerful show of support for one of the sport’s most influential figures.

The statue, crafted in collaboration between the City of Columbia and the organization Statues for Equality, was created to honor Staley’s monumental achievements, not just on the hardwood but throughout her life and career. Beyond wins and titles, Staley has served as a beacon of leadership, empowerment, and inspiration — not only for young female athletes but for entire communities across South Carolina and the nation.

This statue is more than just a tribute to victories. It stands as a powerful symbol of legacy, resilience, and the profound impact Dawn Staley has had on Gamecock Nation and the broader world of women’s sport.
