Ruben Amorim led Sporting Lisbon for the last time at home before his move to Manchester United next week, and the emotional farewell was deeply felt by fans.
Ahead of the match, Sporting supporters unveiled a massive tribute banner featuring Amorim and the trophies he secured with the club, simply saying, “Thank you.” Many fans were seen crying in the stands, visibly moved as the Champions League anthem played and the banner waved behind the players. Afterward, the crowd continued to show their love for Amorim, chanting his name before Manchester City took an early lead.
Amorim, recently appointed by United after Ineos decided to replace Erik ten Hag due to the club’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season, has been vocal about his gratitude to Sporting fans. In a final tribute, he chose to conduct his last pre-match press conference entirely in Portuguese, honoring the supporters who have stood by him.
Amorim’s last game in charge of Sporting will be this Sunday as they face his former club, Braga, in Liga Portugal. He is set to officially begin his United tenure on November 11, giving him two weeks to adjust to life at Old Trafford before taking the field for his debut match against Ipswich Town on November 24.
