A long-term contract extension has been given to Rico Lewis as compensation for a strong debut season at Manchester City last year.
Rico Lewis has committed to Manchester City on a “dream” deal that runs through 2028.
Lewis, 18, had one year remaining on his current contract, but after playing a significant part in City’s treble-winning season in 2022–2023, he has now agreed to a four-year extension on better terms. Lewis impressed Pep Guardiola during the preseason tour last summer, earning him 23 starts in his breakthrough season.
Lewis, a young player, was credited by Guardiola with a game-changing contribution because he paved the way for others like Kyle Walker and John Stones to move from fullback into midfield, which turned out to be the Blues’ winning strategy in the Champions League.
“It’s been an unbelievable year for me, and now to sign this contract is a dream come true,” he said. “As a City supporter, I can recall seeing us take home championships when I was young, and it’s the only place I’ve ever wanted to be.
“Knowing I’ll be around until 2028 is fantastic, and I can’t wait to keep working and keeping getting better. Beginning with the academy, where I learned a ton and am incredibly appreciative of everything they did, everyone at the club has been so incredible.
“The fans have been fantastic, and I’ll do everything in my power to ensure that the team continues to succeed for them and the club.”.
Lewis’ intelligence and adaptability, according to Director of Football Txiki Begiristain, have impressed club staff, and the hierarchy believes the full-back can significantly contribute to City’s future successes.
“Rico is a really intelligent footballer and is already a mature and trustworthy member of the squad,” Begiristain said. For a player of his age, it is exceptional that he takes in every bit of knowledge that Pep imparts. We are incredibly proud to have followed his development through the Academy and to have witnessed his assured play for the first team.
We think he can contribute to more success in the upcoming years because of his contagious energy and hunger among the squad. “.
Lewis continued, “It is amazing for me.
Even I could not have predicted my quick rise from the under-18s to Champions League winner in just over a year. It has been a year where everything has gone so quickly; I never really expected it from this time last year.
“My family and I find it to be incredible. Now is my chance to pursue my goals and do everything in my power to advance my skills and contribute more to the club. They must value it just as much as I do.
“I now have the opportunity to play for a team that has won the Triple Crown, and the club I have spent my entire life supporting has offered me a new contract. From the time I was a child, [my parents] drove me to training every day, so for them, it is incredible.
I’ve only ever known the [city].
I’ve been at Platt Lane since I was eight years old, and I’m now at the CFA. I’ve attended countless training sessions every week and have only been surrounded by people I’ve known my entire life. Almost like a family, that’s how it is.
Some of the players have won five Premier League titles, so I want to win three, four, five, or however many I can. And to keep working toward the Champions League. “.
